Commit to Be Fit

Thanks to grant funding from the Sprouts' Healthy Communities Foundation, we're challenging all of our matches to commit to be fit this summer. Here's how it works:

Email [email protected] to sign up.
Each week with your Little, track your activity minutes through the Google Fit app - we can help you out with downloading this.
Submit your activity minutes through a screenshot to [email protected] at the end of the month.
Get rewarded! We'll have prizes for matches with the most minutes each month, and a celebration with awards after the conclusion of the program at the end of August.

Don't worry, you don't need to come up with activity ideas all on your own! We'll be in touch every couple weeks with tips and tricks and info on some great places around town - like the pool at the GSR and Marina PaddleFit - that are offering deals to support matches in the program. We'll even have some active group activities you can get in on! We know many matches already make exercise a regular part of their routine together - this is your chance to get some prizes and deals to help you keep it up.

Reading with Rescues

Sat, June 1, 10:00 AM - 11:00 AM, SPCA of Northern Nevada, 4950 Spectrum Blvd, Reno, NV 89512

Does your Little love animals? Whether they are really good readers or struggling ones, this is a great opportunity for them (and you) to take along a favorite book to read to the totally non-judgmental dogs at the SPCA shelter. The "Reading Lady" will lead us through what to do so we can help socialize the dogs. It's a win-win for everyone! This is a special event organized just for us, but they can only accomodate 15 matches, so RSVP ASAP! A release form, along with any details you need to know, will be emailed to you a week prior to the event.

Tickets to The Big Dig

Sat, June 1, 9:00 AM - 3:00 PM, Rilite Aggregate, 9208 Western Skies Drive, Reno, NV 89521

This is your chance to make your Little's - and your - wildest Tonka truck dreams come true! More than 45 pieces of big rig equipment will be available for you to take for a test drive, with friendly operators along to guide you. Proceeds benefit the American Cancer Society, which is donating tickets to matches for this event (tickets include lunch). RSVP to reserve your ticket and receive the waiver for your Little's parent to sign.

Financial Literacy for Matches with High School Littles

This is session 5 of 5.  Please note that we agreed to change April’s session to the second Thursday to accommodate everyone’s schedules.  We are thrilled to partner with Wells Fargo Bank, whose trained facilitator will lead matches through five sessions designed to introduce high school students to topics including budgeting, the responsible use of credit, understanding a paycheck stub, and more.  Those who attended the previous sessions need not RSVP again, as we’re expecting you!  If you didn’t attend the first session, please RSVP, as limited space is available.

BBBS Cooking Class

Thursday, June 6, 5:30 PM - 7:30 PM, Natural Grocers, 4819 Kietzke Lane, Reno, NV 89502

While the older kids are learning about finances, let’s get those middle schoolers in the kitchen! Chef Gustavo Velasco will lead up to 6 matches with Littles ages 8-12 through cooking a simple meal on our brand new induction cooktops.  He needs to be creative as Natural Grocers require all gluten-free cooking on site.  If you can’t make it to this one, don’t fret, as we intend to offer these hands-on cooking classes on an ongoing basis.  Please RSVP early to reserve your spot.

Computer Corps

Sat, June 8, 9:00 AM - 1:00 PM, 550 Mallory Way, Carson City, NV 89701

Join our BBBS group to learn how to take apart donated computers and related hardware, to be used to refurbish computers for local families. If your Little and you are up for it, they can actually earn their own computer by donating 48 hours of time.  RSVP by June 5.
