Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northern Nevada received an incredible call during the summer: Would 25 of the low-income families we serve be interested in a free Christmas dinner?

The call came from an anonymous donor looking to give back during the holidays and make a difference for the families of “Littles”, low-income and at-risk children in our community who have a Big Brother or Sister as a mentor. The donor secured the help of Sardina’s Fine Italian Bistro to provide the food, a glass artist who will make one-of-a-kind pendants for all the moms in attendance, a photographer to capture holiday photos, and even got Santa Claus direct from North Pole, Alaska. With the help of about 20 volunteers, he also bought gifts for all the children.

“The low-income families in our community aren’t always able to have a nice dinner and presents under the tree at Christmas,” said Beth Osborne, program director for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northern Nevada (BBBSNN). “Opportunities like this one provide relief and normalcy to poverty-stricken parents during what can be a very stressful time. We want to give our children everything, and for many parents, that isn’t an option.”
