So Many Ways to Get Started

Looking to get involved? Whether you’re interested in donating, volunteering or enrolling your child, Big Brothers Big Sisters offers several types of programs in communities across the country.

Big meets Little.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northern Nevada helps children who need us most: Children living in single-parent homes, growing up in poverty, and coping with parental incarceration (sometimes all three at once!). Making these Matches, and performing all the background work involved, is possible because of donations from people like you.

Volunteer mentors commit to at least one year of meeting 1-2 hours per week with their Little. Throughout their Match, they are supported by our caring, professional staff, who help with resources, activities, and so much more. We have two programs to fit Big schedules and Little needs. Couples can even mentor together!

Community Based Matches meet at the park, museums and other spots around northern Nevada once per week to really experience all our community has to offer. Check out the Big calendar to get an idea of what our Matches do.

Site Based Matches meet at the Little's school or after-school program once per week to work on craft projects, do homework or play games. The Site Based Program can work better for people who want to mentor, but have their own kids at home, or need a more structured program.

How a Big becomes a Big—and a Little, a Little.

Before we make a Match, we do our homework. After someone expresses an interest in becoming a Big, they go through an extensive background check and careful interview process. Then we match Bigs and Littles based on location, personalities and preferences. And we provide full support from the start, so matches can grow into lasting, fruitful friendships. It’s also important to note that the entire matching process is made possible through donations—we can’t do what we do without them!

Why do we need Big Brothers?

70% of our children waiting for a Big are boys, but only 3 out of every 10 inquiries to volunteer come from men. Research shows that having the positive influence of a Big Brother makes a real difference in a boy`s life. So join the hundreds of thousands of volunteers that give a young person someone to look up to. And learn why so many are now saying, “I get back so much more than I give.”
